Be Gutsy Five Seconds at a Time

I was talking with my friend’s four year old daughter at a cookout last weekend. She was telling me how she recently jumped off the diving board for the first time into the deep end by herself. She mentioned how scared she was at first but that mommy and daddy told her she could do it and she did. I could tell she was very proud considering she was grinning from ear to ear. I can only imagine how she jumps off the board now compared to how she jumped off that first fearful time.

This experience made me think about the things I wimp out on in sales. Think about this in your career…is there a behavior you seem to always avoid because you are scared of failing? I know in my sales career I have had my gutsy moments and my wimpy moments. In my gutsy moments even when I have failed at least I did the behavior and had the chance of success or can chalk it up to good practice, however when I don’t even take the risk I am guaranteed to lose which inevitably makes me feel worse than when I fail. I have to remind myself to push through the fear like my friend’s daughter. I only have to be gutsy five seconds at a time.
