Everyone Should Have One

January 19th, 2010

My wife and I went on a trip to Mazatlan Mexico to get away for a bit.  We have been to Mexico several times for vacations but this was our first time to Mazatlan.  My Mom had an unused week for her timeshare and asked if we wanted to use it before it expired.  She was crazy enough to take the kids so I didn’t think twice and booked the flights and off we went!

As soon as we check in that evening the front desk informs us we are ‘eligible’ for a free breakfast and a 500 peso credit if we spend 90 minutes listening to their timeshare presentation.  Before I could get a single word out my wife says “sounds great, what time should we be down?”

If you have never been through a timeshare sell it is interesting to say the least.  I will never forget the gentleman who helped us (his name was Patricio).  He asked us a few questions then proceeded to walk us around and tell us why we needed to buy a timeshare.  About 120 minutes into a 90 minute presentation he says “this is a no-brainer, everyone needs a timeshare, I don’t know why anyone would NOT have one!” and does the predictable alternative ending close (would you like the 1 or 2 bedroom?).

My response back to him: how many time shares do you have?  His response: None.  At this point his entire body posture changed and his rate of speech picked up.  He just finished telling me everyone should have one but he didn’t?  Was he a true product of his product? HECK NO!

If you work for a hair removal company you should not have a unibrow and a hairy back. If you supply HVAC equipment your house and office should work flawlessly.  If you are a financial planner you should have your retirement planned and goals established for your money.

The next time you are out selling ask yourself, are you a product of your product?
