Leadership…an Overused Word

July 27th, 2009

I was recently speaking to a group of Professionals and when it came time to discuss topics the director mentioned “Leadership.”  After asking a few questions about why she asked me to talk about leadership we agreed on a topic that would provide benefit to her group.

Here is what I soon realized…..leadership is a word that is thrown around and different people have different definitions of the word.  I realized some Business Owners ‘thought’ they were leading their people when in fact they were just trying to manage them.  You manage projects, budgets, processes but you lead people.  How are you using the different roles as a leader (Supervisor, Coach, Trainer and Mentor) to grow your people?

I couldn’t ask all 120 people what they just learned in the time I was there but I did get a common answer among those who I did ask.  “I thought I was being a mentor to my people or I thought I was coaching them along when I guess I was just supervising them!”  People are people, sometimes you have to help them discover the answers to help create buy-in and remember to set the right path that you would like them to follow.
